A couple of Newberry County soccer players achieved All State status.
Newberry High’s Ruben Alvarez and Mid-Carolina’s Dillon Pelton were two out of 18 soccer players all across the state to make the S.C. High School League’s All State team for the 2A division.
Both schools are 2A schools.
The competition is tough, but Newberry High coach Cornelius Cromer and Mid-Carolina coach Anthony Pelton both agree that these boys are good, solid players.
The All State teams were chosen in May and Cromer and Pelton say that the boys worked hard for this honor. They are both rising seniors.
There was plenty of practice time with their respective teams as well as scrimmages and strategies that the coaches helped the boys work on.
Practice was an almost daily thing, according to Cromer as well as training.
For Alvarez, he also played his cousins and friends. He started playing in middle school and hasn’t stopped kicking yet.
As for Pelton, his father has a picture of him from when he was only 3 years old. Not only is Dillon an avid soccer player, but his dad also played as well.
Pelton plays midfield as does Alvarez, but the coaches say that the boys play multiple positions depending on who they are playing and what the team needs.
Alvarez plays mostly forward and Cromer says he has great speed.
The boys will be seniors in the upcoming school year and have plans to keep playing soccer their senior year.
