A three day training by the Newberry County Water Rescue and Dive Team ended up with a real life rescue on Saturday.
The county team hosted a training that started on Friday with six other agencies from across the state.
The class was part of an intensive three day public safety training class taught by Dive Rescue International, says Newberry County Water Rescue and Dive Team Leader Glenn Hamm.
“The teams, composed of public safety divers, surface support personnel and law enforcement investigators, are learning the latest methods to more safely and more effectively respond to water related incidents,” he added on Friday. “The 18 personnel will be performing classroom and pool work all day Friday and Saturday morning. From there, they will spend the second half of their class in Lake Murray for hands on training sessions and field evaluations.”
But the plan changed when the teams were called to a drowning in Fairfield County Saturday afternoon.
After the recovery was made on Saturday, the training that included teams from Horry and Lexington counties, spent much of the day finishing the Saturday classroom working and reviewing the Saturday drowning.
