NEWBERRY — Ruby Coats Hughes, 80, of Newberry, widow of John Lawson Hughes, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 4, 2012; a great gain for heaven, a great loss for her family.
She was born on Aug. 7, 1931, in Newberry County, a daughter of the late James Felton and Mildred Ryals Coats.
Mrs. Hughes was a lifetime member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Newberry (Glory Tabernacle Church) where she was very active in the Ladies Auxiliary and was not ashamed to profess her faith. She retired as a sales clerk and enjoyed flowers and baking.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by her children and spouses, David (Karen) Hughes of Newberry, Billy (Darlena) Hughes of Laurens, and Farrah H. (Dan) Schon of Irmo; sister, Margaret (Vernon, deceased) Sheppard of Newberry; brothers, Carl (Libby, deceased) Coats of Clifton Forge, Va., Jack (Norma) Coats of White Sulfur Springs, W.V., Mac “Billy” (Lillian) Coats of Leesville, and Dewey (Carolyn) Coats of Columbia; grandchildren, Christi Hughes, Amy Workman, Keith Alexander all of Newberry, Nick Schon of Irmo, Chad (Stephanie) Alexander of Lexington, Jennifer (Michael) Wood, John Hughes all of Prosperity, Tony (Tonya) Leopard, Jeff (Lynn) Sizemore all of Laurens, and Tony (Missy) Griffin of Simpsonville; great-grandchildren, Landon-Lee Hughes, Brandy Leopard, Brooke Leopard, Brianna Leopard, Kasey Sizemore, Nicole Kissiah, Blake Robinson, Katie Griffin, Brandon and Alex Wood.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth “Lib” (Coy, deceased) Jones; brothers, Clyde (Debbie, deceased) Coats and James (Dot) Coats.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday at Glory Tabernacle Church. Interment will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.
The family will be at the residence and will receive friends from 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whitaker Funeral Home, Newberry.
