Newberry men’s hoops knocks off 11th-ranked Catawba

The Newberry College men’s basketball team outscored No. 11 Catawba 25-15 in the final 10 minutes of the game en route to a 78-68 upset win in Eleazer Arena Saturday afternoon.

Newberry (14-4, 4-3 South Atlantic Conference) was led by senior forward Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas), who scored 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting for the field and 8-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. Junior forward Brett Goodwell (Inglewood, Calif.) recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore guard Grant Domsic (Winter Garden, Fla.) scored 17 points off the bench. Senior guard Matt Alexander (Atlanta, Ga.) rounded out Newberry’s double-digit scorers with 10 points.

Catawba (13-5, 5-2 SAC) dropped its second straight SAC game despite 21 points from junior guard Antonio Houston (Charlotte, N.C.). Junior guard Rob Fields (Orangeburg) scored 12 points and sophomore guard Dominick Reid (Charlotte, N.C.) netted 10.

Goodwell opened the scoring with a great post move followed by a thunderous dunk, but Catawba took off on a 15-4 run capped by a dunk from Donald Rutherford (Morganton, N.C.) that gave it a 15-6 lead with 14 minutes left in the first half.

Newberry answered with a 12-2 run during the next three minutes, taking a 21-17 lead at the 10:08 mark on a layup from senior guard Vytautas Valiulis (Vilnius, Lithuania). Catawba regained the lead at 22-21 on a bucket from Matthew Sossamon (Henderson, N.C.) and a three from Houston before Newberry exploded on another run, scoring the next 10 points, while holding the guests scoreless for nearly five minutes.

Catawba narrowed the margin down to four points with just over a minute in the half, but an Alexander tip-in gave Newberry a 33-27 lead going into the locker room.

Newberry scored the first points of the second half on a Goodwell tip-in, but a 19-4 Catawba run over the next 6:30 put Catawba up by seven points with 13:23 to play when a Fields’ free throw put the guests up, 46-39. Newberry roared back to tie the game at 53-all with 9:03 to play before both of Newberry’s point guards — Valiulis and Will Dawkins (Spartanburg) —fouled out with five minutes left. A Rutherford tip-in tied the game at 61-all with 4:41 to play, but that would be Catawba’s final field goal until less than a minute was left in the game.

NC scored the next eight points in a row between Martin and Kendrick Johnson (Orangeburg) and held a 69-61 lead with 1:47 left. Catawba cut that lead to five with 38 seconds left, but a Donzell Williams foul and a technical foul on the Catawba bench halted any momentum the guests had as Newberry canned 3-of-4 free throws to make it a three-possession game in the final 30 seconds. Alexander nailed a pair of free throws in the final 10 seconds to give Newberry the 78-68 victory.

Newberry shot 28-of-59 (47.5-percent) from the floor in the contest and limited Catawba to 22-of-64 (34.4-percent) in the game. Newberry was also excellent at the charity stripe, hitting 18-of-21 free throws, including 17-of-20 in the second half.

The win against No. 11 Catawba is also momentous for Newberry, as it is the team’s first recorded victory over a nationally-ranked squad since joining Division II in the early 1990’s.

The scarlet and gray return to action tonight with the first of two South Atlantic Conference road games.

Newberry will visit Brevard College for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
