Newberry native Alvin F. Wells, MD, PhD, has been named one of the “Top physicians of Milwaukee” in the recent Milwaukee Magazine.

To make it on the list, surveys were sent out to 5,000 area medical professionals asking them to nominate three top physicians in 33 different specialities.

Wells is one of only 178 physicians to achieve this year’s honor and one of only seven rheumatologists.

Wells says, “It really means a lot when a doctor says you are the type of doctor to whom they would send their family.”

Having been in the North Chicago/Southern Wisconsin area for 10 years, Wells has built an international reputation with his Rheumatology and Immunotherapy Center (www.rheumatologyitc.com).

Wells is a board certified rheumatologist and is the director of the center in Franklin, Wis.

He is also a clinical assistant professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. and an adjunct assistant professor at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.

He earned his PhD in immunology from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia.

Wells graduated from Newberry High School in 1979 where he was the first black male student body president. He is active in the community and serves on the Alumni Executive Council at Wofford College in Spartanburg where he graduated in 1983.

An internationally renowned speaker, Wells has published numerous peer-reviewed journal articles, letters, book chapters and abstracts. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and the American College of Rheumatology.

Wells has received numerous awards, including the University of South Carolina School of Medicine’s Distinguished Alumni Award and the American College of Rheumatology Research Award.

He has had grant support from the Arthritis Foundation and from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Having studied two years at Uppsala University in Sweden, Wells is fluent in Swedish.

He has been married for 25 years to Gina Johnson Wells of Columbia and they have twins, Nicholas and Louisa.

His father is the late Mack Hardy Wells and his mother is the Margaret Wells Mozee.
