The man who was the suspect in a five county chase with speeds over 100 miles per hour is now in jail.

William Edward Freeman, 51, of Slater Road, Anderson, reportedly stole the car of circuit judge Cordell Maddox outside of a convenience store in Anderson.

Maddox said he went into the store around 5 p.m. to purchase sinus medication and left the keys in the car and the car running.

Freeman, who has previous convictions for drugs, grand larceny and assault and battery, took the car.

He then led police on a 90 mile chase with speeds of 100 miles an hour. The chase went from Anderson up I-85 into Greenville County to Spartanburg County where he turned onto Interstate 26.

Freeman then fled through Laurens County where two truckers tried to block him in with Freeman going off the road and around the trucks.

Freeman then hit a Laurens County Sheriff’s Office vehicle before entering Newberry County.

With a dozen Newberry County Sheriff’s deputies at each exit in Newberry County, Freeman stopped under the Highway 121 bridge when he spotted officers with spike strips across the road and nowhere for him to go.

Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster says Maddox had a gun in the vehicle but it was not in Freeman’s possession when he was stopped.

Freeman was taken from the scene in a Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office car to Laurens County Memorial Hospital where he was treated and taken to the Laurens County R. Eugene Johnson Detention Center.

He has been charged with failure to stop for a blue light in Anderson County and attempted murder and failure to stop for a blue light in Laurens County.

Freeman was expected to have a bond hearing Wednesday at 4 p.m.
