The Newberry YMCA Swim Team had 7 swimmers qualify for the State meet which was held in the new Westside Aquatic Center in Greenville, SC this past weekend. Swimmers who qualified were Ben Hawkins, Kaitlin Kunkle, EJ McGinnis, Mark Mulhall, Elisabeth Anne Orr, Thomas Orr, and Virginia Summer. The 11 & up swimmers swam in the morning preliminaries then the top 20 swimmers swam in finals in the evening. The 10 & under swimmers competed in the afternoon with timed finals.
Participating Swimmers and how they placed:
Ben Hawkins (age 10)
placed 4th in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:24.70 and broke the NYST 9-10 boy’s team record
placed 5th in the 50 yard breastroke with a time of 38.71 and broke the NYST 9-10 boy’s team record
placed 6th in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 6:28.46 and broke the NYST 9-10 boys team record
He also swam: 200 freestyle 15th place 2:30.16; 100 Individual Medley 13th place 1:19.61; 100 freestyle 13th place 1:09.37, 50 backstroke 18th place 38.11, 100 backstroke 19th place 1:24.38 and 50 free 31.17
Virginia Summer (age 18)
placed 5th in 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.09
placed 8th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.48
placed 9th in the 1650 freestyle(mile) with a time of 18:49.23 and broke the 15-18 year old girl NYST team record
She also swam the 200 freestyle 2:01.30, 100 butterfly 1:02.55, 400 Individual medley 4:56.52, and came in 15th place in the 50 freestyle 25.10
Thomas Orr (age 18)
placed 6th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.35
placed 8th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.84
He also swam 200 freestyle 1:51.79, 100 breastroke 1:07.96, 100 butterfly 55.64 100 backstroke 59.25 and 200 Individual medley2:06.33
Kaitlin Kunkle (17) swam in the 50 free with a time of 26.00, 100 back 1:06.87, 100 free 56.99 and 200 Individual medley 2:19.21
EJ McGinnis (12)swam in the 50 breastroke and swam a time of 40.49
Elisabeth Anne Orr (16) swam in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.
100 breastroke 1:13.39 and 100 butterfly 1:03.39 and was 16th place after preliminaries.
