The identity of a Newberry man who was killed in a traffic accident the evening of Thursday, Dec. 22, has been released.

The man who was killed has been identified as Ray Chapman, 62, of 174 Cranbrook Lane, Newberry, according to Newberry County Chief Deputy Coroner Lewis Lee.

Lee said Chapman was walking his dog at the time of the accident, which was shortly before 7 p.m., and it was raining.

According to Lance Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Chapman was struck by a vehicle on U.S. Highway 76 — or C.R. Koon Highway — less than one mile east of Newberry around 6:45 p.m. last Thursday.

Rhyne reported William Eigner, 45, of Blair, was driving a 2004 Dodge pickup west on C.R. Koon Highway. Chapman was in the roadway and was struck by the pickup driven by Eigner.

Rhyne reported Eigner was wearing his seat belt and did not receive any injuries in the accident.

A host of Newberry County law enforcement and first responder personnel — including the sheriff’s office, EMS and coroner’s office — along with the S.C. Highway Patrol responded to the scene of the accident that evening.
