The second-ranked Newberry College wrestling team claimed its 10th straight home victory as it defeated St. Andrews Presbyterian, 45-6. The victory improved Newberry's record to 14-2 on the season as the scarlet and gray won eight of 10 matches.

The dual started off with three of the first four matches being forfeits in Newberry's favor, as the Knights failed to field a wrestler at 174, 197 and 285 pounds.

At 184-pound, Bryant Blanton (Summerville) faced off against Brad Mckee and claimed a first-period fall. The pinfall was Blanton's eighth of the season, seven in the opening period.

In the 125-pound match, Matt Oliver (Toms River, N.J.) pinned the Knights' Matt Fletcher at the 5:48 mark in the third period. The fall was Oliver's seventh of the season, as he improved his record to 18-2.

St. Andrews won its first match of the night as Casey Gashaw defeated Newberry's Gerald Jenkins (Charleston) with a 15-11 decision. Trailing 14-6 going into the final period, Jenkins nearly pulled off a comeback as he scored a takedown and a subsequent three-point nearfall.

Tony Washington (Georgetown) came away with his 12th win of the season as he defeated Dan Butcher with a 7-3 decision. Washington scored three takedowns in the match as he increased Newberry's lead to 33-3.

At 149-pounds, Latra Collick (Berlin, Md.) dominated Troy Baranik as he racked up 15 points before scoring a pinfall at the 3:42 mark. The pin was Collick's sixth of the season as he improved his dual record to 12-4.

Raleigh Abbott (Powder Springs, Ga.) competed in the 157-pound match, but was unable to come away with the victory as he lost to Gregg Todd by a 9-2 decision. The loss decreased Newberry's lead to 35-6.

Brandon Kelly (Fort Myers, Fla.) claimed his 12th victory of the season with a forfeit at the 165-pound match.

Newberry returns to action on Monday when it travels to Jefferson City, Tenn. for a matchup with Carson-Newman College.

Newberry men runs past Railsplitters, 65-49

The Newberry College men's basketball team jumped out to a 17-point halftime lead and cruised to a 65-49 victory against Lincoln Memorial University in South Atlantic Conference action Wednesday at home.

Newberry (12-3, 3-2 SAC) followed the lead of sophomore forward Jesse Wheeler (Suwanee, Ga.) who set a career-high in points for the second consecutive game, with 26 points to go with seven rebounds. Clemente Martin (Freeport, Bahamas) added 12 points.

NC forced 31 turnovers in the game. The 49 LMU points is the fewest points Newberry has allowed in a South Atlantic Conference game since a 59-44 win against Tusculum in 2003.

Lincoln Memorial (8-7, 3-2 SAC) had a double-double from sophomore forward D'Mario Curry (Detroit, Mich.), who scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds off the bench. Stuart Miller (Harrogate, Tenn.) added 10 points for the Railsplitters. The LMU starting lineup combined for only nine points in the contest.

LMU scored the first bucket of the game on a jumper from Brandon Armstrong (Decatur, Ga.), but would not lead again after that. Newberry blasted ahead with a 13-2 run during the next six minutes, capped by one of Wheeler's four 3-pointers on the night.

The guests cut the lead down to five at the 10-minute mark, but another Newberry surge put the game out of reach.

The scarlet and gray will continue on their quest this Saturday with their final regular season non-conference game of the season. Tipoff against Allen University is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in Eleazer Arena.
