The man killed this weekend while allegedly attempting a home invasion, had a lengthy criminal history, and a reputation and nickname to go with it.
Willie Eddie Hiller was known to police as “Badman,” while many locals called him “Batman.” Hiller had a reputation for leading law enforcement officers on foot chases in the Helena and Kendall Road area.
In recent crime reports concerning Hiller, he was accused shooting a man in the arm.
On July 26, Hiller allegedly had an argument with a man at a gathering at 924 Gray St., one of the addresses that Hiller called home.
During the exchange, $300 fell from a man's pocket and Hiller attempted to take the money, reports said. A fight ensued with Hiller being aided by two others.
As the other man ran from the area, Hiller reportedly shot him in the upper left arm.
The man who was shot told deputies that Hiller and the other two took his cell phone and money.
After a two-day search, Hiller turned himself in and was charged with armed robbery and assault and battery with intent to kill.
At the time of his death, Hiller had not entered a plea regarding the charges.
Also pending were charges of distribution of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine in the proximity of a school, two counts of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine in the proximity of a school, and possession of stolen property.
Hiller will not be prosecuted posthumously for these crimes.
