A college graduation party turned violent over the weekend and one person was shot.

A fight that began at the old skating rink, appears to have led to a shooting at the Highway 34 Waffle House, and the arrest of at least one Newberry College senior, Terrance Maurice Spillers, 22, of 1984 Arbutus Ave., North Charleston.

At 3:11 a.m. Saturday, deputies responded to a shooting incident at the Waffle House on S.C. Highway 34 at I-26. “Deputies found that there was one gunshot victim, who was shot in the back,” describes Sheriff Lee Foster.

Antonio Lamond Gray, 26, of 896 Bush River Road, was taken by private vehicle to Newberry County Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Richland County Memorial Hospital. Reports from the medical staff to deputies indicate his injuries do not appear to be life threatening, Foster said.

A party at the old skating rink on Highway 34, several miles from the Waffle House, was celebrating the imminent graduation of Spillers.

“At some point, a very large fight broke out with approximately 40 persons involved,” reports Foster. “There was a paid security guard on site, and he sprayed everyone with gas with the subsequent effects breaking up the party.

“As the party goers went to the Waffle House, a gray Toyota Camry pulled into the parking lot and a suspect from the car began shooting at a crowd going into the Waffle House. The victim was hit in the back and went down.”

Deputies determined that Newberry College students were responsible for the shots were and found the suspects' vehicle at the school.

“In an ironic twist to this incident, the graduation party at the skating rink that led to this entire incident had been for Terrance Spillers, who is now wanted by police for assault and battery with intent to kill,” the sheriff said Saturday morning. Spillers turned himself into law enforcement later that day.

“This arrest would not have been possible without the invaluable assistance of the Newberry College athletic department and administrative staff,” said Foster.

Spillers is accused of being the shooter in the incident and his bond was set at $100,000 by a Newberry County magistrate. He is still in custody at the Newberry County Detention Center.

Matthew Oneil Alexander, 22, of 937 Carla Place, Norcross, Ga.; and Clemente Harvey Martin, 23, of 2100 College St., Newberry, also turned themselves in to law enforcement Saturday, but have yet to be charged.

Foster says charges may be pending against the two, but he and Eighth Circuit Solicitor Jerry Peace are discussing the potential charges.

Foster said that all three of the men are students at Newberry College, and that he could not offer enough praise to the entire staff at Newberry College. The college administration and athletic staff worked with law enforcement in the investigation and actively assisted in the search for the suspects.

Spillers is a former basketball player and Alexander and Martin are currently on the basketball team.

Both Alexander and Martin are starters on the team and Martin is the team's leading scorer. The two are currently listed as inactive on the basketball roster.

Foster added that the Newberry Police Department was a tremendous asset to the investigation offering great assistance with the investigation, particularly once it turned to Newberry College.
