Local hoops roundup: Whitmire girls blast Newberry Academy, 55-19

The Whitmire Community School girls' basketball team improved its record against in-county teams to 2-0 on the season with a 55-19 romp of Newberry Academy Friday.

The Wolverines closed the first half on a 14-5 run to take a 37-16 lead into halftime.

Whitmire held Newberry Academy to just three second-half points for the comfortable win.

Reigning Region II-A Player of the Year Kim Geyer led all scorers with 19 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

Crystal Wallace had a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Brittany Duncan added 10 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Elaina Alcocer chipped in eight points, including a pair of threes.

Marina Miller and Beth Carter led Newberry Academy with four points each.

The Wolverines will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Mid-Carolina for a 6 p.m. tipoff.

Rebels fall a short at Emerald

The Mid-Carolina High School boys' basketball team dropped to 1-1 on the season with a 52-48 loss at Emerald Saturday.

Hubert Wicker led the Rebels with 11 points, while Calvin Herbert pitched in 10.

Mac Lake added eight, while Krishawn Holley chipped in six. The Rebels will face Whitmire tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in the home opener in their new gym.

Rough weekend for Newberry boys

The Newberry High School boys' basketball team dropped to 1-2 on the season after losing twice this weekend at home.

The Bulldogs fell to Chapin 61-48 on Friday, and were hammered by Great Falls 56-27 on Saturday.

Tyrone Tobe had a big game for Newberry Friday as he had a game-high 16 points. Sam Chaplin chipped in 11, while Travis Burton added six.

In Saturday's game, no Newberry player scored more than six points.

The Bulldogs will try to rebound Friday when they travel to Airport for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Bulldog girls split this weekend

The Newberry girls' basketball team bounced back from a 61-21 loss to Chapin Friday by knocking off Great Falls 47-42 in overtime Saturday.

The Bulldogs are now 1-2 on the season. Shatarra Sheppard led the Bulldogs in Friday's loss with nine points.

Sharae Baxter had a huge night Saturday as she led the team with 22 points. Sheppard pitched in eight, while Teuana Vanlue chipped in seven.

The Bulldogs will return to action Friday when they travel to Airport for a 6 p.m. game.
