Whitmire firefighters responded to two fires at homes during the weekend.

The first was Friday afternoon when a fire destroyed a home at 198 Maybinton Road, just across the Union County line.

The house was in an isolated area and down a long drive, so the fire was only noticed by the smoke it gave off. The home “was already on the ground” when firefighters arrived, according to Whitmire firefighter Michael Thomas.

The homeowner was in the process of remodeling another home and has moved into the other.

Firefighters from Whitmire, Consolidated and Union fire departments responded to the call.

On Saturday, Whitmire firefighters were called to a fire at a house on Broome Street. When they arrived, firefighters found a child had put some type of plastic, possibly a toy, into the home's gas heater.

The fire did no damage to the home.
