The Prosperity Police Chief is being investigated after claims were made that he ran over his ex-mother-in-law's foot and then drove away.

Police Chief Craig Nelson allegedly met his ex-mother-in-law, Darlene White, at the Prosperity

walking track around noon on Tuesday. The two were meeting for White to give Nelson a copy of one of his children's social security cards. Nelson was in a Prosperity patrol car and uniform at the time of the meeting.

White said Nelson was smiling and talking to her as she gave him the card, but said he should have had it a longtime ago.

White reports questioning Nelson about why he did not speak to her when she brought his children home on Sunday and asked if he “had a problem with her.”

White recounts that Nelson then rolled up the window on the patrol car and then swerved to the right to make a U-turn and ran over her foot.

The woman said she began screaming that she was hurt and waving her arms as Nelson pulled from the parking lot.

She said she grabbed the back of her truck and held onto it as she hobbled to the cab. White added as she was trying to grab for the truck that she also injured her arm.

White said she called the Sheriff's Office, in tears, as she left the parking lot and drove away.

Deputies responded, and due to the fact that a fellow officer was involved, they turned the case over to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

White went to an emergency room and orthopedist for treatment and reports being told at both that her foot had a “crush injury.“

Prosperity Mayor Larry Spotts says that Nelson denies the allegations and that the town is supporting their police chief 100 percent.

“Until he is proven different, we will go on his word,“ said Spotts.

Nelson remains on active duty while the investigation is ongoing.

The Sheriff's Office confirms turning the case over to SLED. SLED is no longer confirming the existence of a case when the investigation is of an individual, spokespeople at the agency said.

Nelson did not return a call left at the police station yesterday.
