NEWBERRY - James O. “Butch” Zobel, 85, of 2235 Derrill Ave., Newberry, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008 at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

Mr. Zobel was born on May 24, 1923 in Newberry, a son of the late Charles J. and Nancy G. Zobel.  He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corps for three years. Mr. Zobel attended Newberry College and was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer and the Men's Bible Class. He worked as the Newberry County magistrate and chief magistrate for 26 years.

Mr. Zobel is survived by his wife, Margaret “Bobbie” Hollingsworth Zobel; and three sons, Jimmy Zobel and wife, Vickie, of Prosperity, David Zobel of Sunburst, Mont., and Kent Zobel of Newberry. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Wednesday in Newberry Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Caldwell Day.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, at Whitaker Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers will be Barry Koon, Johnny Mack Scurry, Bobby Gilliam, Brent Yarborough, William Young, Bobby Cole Yarborough and Brian Yarborough. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Men's Bible Class of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.
