A Prosperity man is in jail after a high speed chase from Wal-Mart to the county line and chases with the Sheriff's Office and Chapin police.

Around 12:50 p.m. Tuesday a Newberry police officer saw a car speeding on Main Street near Wal-Mart.

The driver, Bobby Gene Cotney, 49, of 450 Shelter Bay Drive, Prosperity, pulled into the Wal-Mart parking lot but as the Newberry police officer walked up to the vehicle, he sped away.

Cotney drove out by the Murphy gas station and made a right turn onto Highway 219 and “flew out of the city,” according to Newberry Police Captain Chuck Counts.

Counts said speeds were “excessive” as officers chased the white Pontiac to the county line at Highway 176 where they called off the chase.

During the chase he ran several motorist off the road.

Sheriff deputies and Chapin police then got into a short chases with him.

About an hour-and-a-half after the chase, Cotney, who knows Newberry Police Chief Jackie Swindler, turned himself over to Swindler.

He was then taken to the Newberry Police Department for questioning.

Newberry police have charged Cotney with third offense driving under suspension, reckless driving and failure to stop for a blue light.

Chapin police are charging him with reckless driving and the case remains under investigation.

Newberry police are asking anyone who was run off the roadway by the white car to report it to them by calling 321-1010.
