Within the Newberry County School District, 219 employees have salaries that exceed $50,000.

Names and salaries are listed by schools and district positions are compared to other state districts.

The information is available through S.C. Freedom of Information Act requests.

How teachers' pay is determined

Basic

Teachers' salaries are based primarily on two factors: the number of years they have taught and their level of education. A bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement and a doctorate merits the highest experience-level pay.

Teachers' base pay is determined by the state's mandated teacher salary schedule, and districts can add a local supplement to the minimum amount.

District 19 in Barnwell and districts 1 through 3 in Dillon add nothing.

Cherokee and Union counties add approximately 9 percent, and Spartanburg County adds 13 percent.

Newberry County School District adds 6.5 percent, resulting in a starting salary of $30,824.

The national salary average for new teachers according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers is $32,831. The average national salary for all teachers is $43,342.

According to the National Education Association, new teachers should start out earning $40,000 for training, responsibility and extra work hours required for the job.

Supplements

Depending on a teacher's specialty, supplements are added.

Teachers who complete national board certification, which certifies teachers who have voluntarily met rigorous guidelines set by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, earn an additional $10,000 per year for 10 years.

The state gives $7,500 of the $10,000, and $2,500 comes from the school district.

The district has 49 employees who have their national board certification, 42 of whom earn more than $50,000.

Head high school football coaches and high school band directors also get supplements, plus additional pay for working extra days.

Head football coaches get a $4,289 surplus and pay for 20 additional working days.

Band directors get a $4,245 surplus and pay for 20 additional working days.

ROTC and Junior ROTC instructor salaries are funded 50 percent from the district, and 50 percent from the Army.

Where teachers' salaries come from

Teachers' salaries are chiefly fed from three sources: the district's general fund revenue giving roughly 80 percent, federal money adding roughly 10 percent and state money giving roughly 10 percent.

The district's general fund is fed 28 percent from the local tax base, 10 percent from federal transfers and roughly 62 percent from state money, which also draws from local taxpayers.
