Many local residents know the county has seen little rain this summer and the Drought Response Committee agrees by saying the county is in an extreme drought.

On Tuesday, the state Drought Response Committee added Newberry, Anderson, Abbeville, Greenwood, Laurens, Union, Saluda, Edgefield and McCormick counties to the list in the extreme designation. In June, the committee placed Cherokee, Greenville, Oconee, Pickens and Spartanburg counties in the extreme drought category.

The committee recommends that water systems tell their customers to voluntarily and aggressively cut water consumption.

However, both the Newberry County Water and Sewer Authority, Newberry City, Town of Prosperity, and Whitmire water system all say they are monitoring the situation but the water supply is holding up.

Newberry City Manager Eric Budds says officials had concerns over the water levels but usage dropped at the last of July.

City leaders will continue to closely monitor the water supply.
