Jeremy Earl Vaughn, 34, of Shelbybille, Tenn. was driving on McNeary Street around 1:20 Tuesday afternoon when he failed to stop for a northbound CSX train.
The collision caused the empty box on the 18-wheeler to be split in half and the back end was mangled with the railroad light poll.
Prosperity Police Officer Deanna Wilbanks reports Vaughn was “just a little shaken up“ but not injured and that he did he did not see the flashing railroad warning lights or the train nor did he hear the train or the bells at the crossing.
Witnesses say the train crossing signal was working when Vaughn cross the tracks. One witness says the tractor-trailer stopped at the tracks and then appeared to try to beat the train.
The collision also did electrical damage to the train.
The wreck caused the intersection and several other crossings to be blocked for several hours and traffic was rerouted.
In the past few years, two other 18-wheelers have been hit at the crossing, which does not have crossing arms.
CSX is in the process of putting crossing arms at the intersection. It has worked on wiring the arms and putting in the footings, but the job has not been completed.
Vaughn was charged with disregarding a railroad signal.
