A Newberry woman survived a wreck early Tuesday, only to be killed seconds later.

Debra Ann Willard Hatchell, 39, of 41 Shrine Club Road, Newberry, was traveling east on I-26 near Clinton just after midnight when she ran off the road and hit the median cable barriers.

The collision with the cables caused Hatchell's vehicle to spin around and face west, according to Laurens County Coroner Nick Nichols.

Hatchell was unable to open the driver's side door but got out of the passenger side of the car.

Nichols said Hatchell walked across the median to the eastbound lane where she was hit by an 18-wheeler.

The 2007 Freightliner was driven by Calvin Morton, 45, of Tennessee. He was not injured in the collision.

The S.C. Highway Patrol Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT), which investigates complicated vehicle crashes, using state-of-the-art technology and analysis to reconstruct the scene, was called in to study the collision, according to Highway Patrol Lance Corporal Scot Edgeworth.

The collision was still under investigation at press time.

Hatchell is survived by her mother, husband, a son and a step-son.

Services for Hatchell will be held tomorrow at Cannon's Creek Prosperity A.R.P. Church Cemetery.
