The Little Rebels had one tough game before the states - against Batesburg-Leesville.
There would be no scare in this time around, as Mid-Carolina blasted Batesburg-Leesville 22-1 to open the subdistrict round Friday in Batesburg.
Mid-Carolina pounded out 22 hits in the game, including a 4-for-4 effort by cleanup hitter Ryan Stoudemire.
The Rebels returning first baseman opened up the All-Stars with a ground rule double in the first inning and finished the game with seven RBIs.
As a team, Mid-Carolina had seven doubles.
“We've got hitters all the way through the lineup,” Mid-Carolina coach Mark Shealy said. “We've got six or seven hitters that can knock it out of the ballpark at anytime. If you don't make a play, we're going to keep hitting it.”
The Rebels return six players from last year's team that advanced to the state tournament, including Stoudemire and leadoff hitter Cole Shealy.
Shealy was 3-for-5 in Friday's opener and made several solid plays at shortshop.
His dad/coach believes that his team's big-game experience will be a major advantage as it continues through tournament play.
“We're returning guys with a lot of experience,” Mark Shealy said. “I was nervous before the game, but they didn't seem to be nervous at all. They looked like they were ready to get that first win and move on.”
The Rebels pitching dominated Batesburg-Leesville. The Panthers managed just one hit in the four-inning game. Derrick Livingston started the game on the mound for Mid-Carolina and picked up the win.
Livingston, another returner from last year's squad, is just one of many options the Rebels have on the mound.
“Derrick Livingston throws hard and we can come out with Ryan Livingston. He's a hard throwing left-hander with movement,” Shealy said. “They all can pitch. I've got 12 pitchers, but they're all learning some new positions. We've got five or six guys that will see the mound regularly.”
