Voters will take the first step Tuesday in deciding who will be the next coroner.

Michael Thomas and John Pollard will face off in a Republican primary Tuesday with polls being open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. All registered voters can vote in the special election.

Pollard is employed with ISE Newberry, a member of the Silverstreet Fire Department, a Vietnam veteran and chair of the Board of Rural Fire Control.

Thomas is a member of the Whitmire fire and rescue squads, a Whitmire councilman, co-owner of Thomas Grocery and Grill, an emergency medical technician and a member of the Board of Rural Fire Control.

The winner of the special primary will go on to face retired Highway Patrol sergeant and democratic Craig Newton in the November election.

Coroner James Smith announced earlier this year that he would not seek re-election. Chief Deputy Coroner Tommy Hedgepath was fighting cancer but was the only candidate that filed to run for the seat.

Hedgepath lost his battle with cancer in late May, leaving the candidacy vacant. Parties opened their books for candidates to file for the position earlier this month.
