The Newberry American Legion Post 24 senior baseball team dropped to 2-2 on the season with an 11-6 loss at Lexington Post 7 Wednesday night.
Post 7 broke open the scoreless tie in the third by scoring on two-out rundown. Lexington had runners on first and third and attempted to steal second. The base stealer got in a rundown and the runner at third scored before the third out of the inning was recorded.
Newberry rallied to tie the game in the top of the fourth, but Lexington responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning. The big blow was a two-out bases-loaded drive that fell just out of the reach of Newberry centerfielder Wilbur Caldwell.
Post 7 took a 9-3 lead into the eighth, before the P24s made things interesting.
Newberry scored three times in the inning and brought the tying run to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.
Newberry High alum Sanchez Gartman was called upon to pinch hit and grounded out to second base to end the inning.
Gartman was seeing his first action since oral surgery last week.
Lexington put up two runs in the eighth to add to its cushion.
Ashton Longshore was saddled with the loss after giving up five earned runs in four innings of work. Post 7 managed just four hits off Longshore, but the Newberry High alum gave up five walks.
Eric Sturgeon, Nick Long and T.J. Lanford came on in relief.
Robby Assemany continued his hot bat this season by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Assemany is hitting .437 with five runs batted in.
Wilbur Caldwell went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while A.B. Jacks finished 2-for-5 with a run batted in.
Ryan Davis had two hits, while Korey Ahrens finished 1-for-5 and scored twice.
Codie Dickert, Longshore, Cody Page, Brenden Roberts and Alex Bedenbaugh each had hits in the game.
Newberry outhit Lexington 15-9.
The P24s will be back in action tonight when they travel to West Columbia Post 79.
Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Airport High School.
