Memorial services planned for Sunday

The plate and overturned cup mean their loved one is no longer there to eat with them, and the single lemon slice represents the bitterness, tears and heartache that families face after losing a veteran.

The solemn table setting is part of the American Legion Post 219 and Auxiliary's honor to deceased veterans for the Memorial Day weekend, said Auxiliary 219 President Georgia Suber.

Both Newberry Posts 219 and 24 will honor veterans this Sunday at separate services and invite the public to join them.

Post 219 will hold its service at 3 p.m. in Memorial Square and have a special table set up to honor veterans, POW's and the late Post 219 Commander Lomas Baker.

Speaker for the memorial service will be decorated Army captain George Wesley Palmore, who returned from Iraq last week after a 16-month overseas tour with the South Carolina Army National Guard. Palmore is a Newberry High School graduate and sheriff's deputy.

Post 24's memorial service will be at its post building at the Legion Headquarters off Highway 34, just past the Newberry Inn under the “egg“ water tower.

The ceremony will honor Newberry County veterans who have died within the last year, and the ladies auxiliary will provide light refreshments.

The speaker will be Brig. Gen. Robert Livingston Jr., commander of the 218th South Carolina National Guard Brigade Combat Team that recently returned from Afghanistan.

Suber is looking forward to the service and is making final music arrangements for Sunday's ceremony.

“I feel great about this. I love our veterans,” said Suber, who has many family military connections.

“I love everyone of them and have been working with veterans since 1956. I get up every morning thinking about what I can do for the veterans because without them, I wouldn't be here and have the freedom I have to get up every morning and have a home, have food to eat and a job.”
