The future certainly looks bright for the Newberry High School wrestling program.

The Bulldogs will inherit a group of wrestlers that had an outstanding season for the Newberry Middle School team.

The Tigers' squad had six wrestlers to win multi-team meets at Belton-Honey Path or Lugoff-Elgin this season, and three that advanced to the state tournament.

“This is going to be great for the wrestling program at (Newberry High School),” Newberry Middle School coach Rick Attaway said. “These young men all had great seasons and have potential to be outstanding wrestlers at the high school.”

Heavyweight D.J. Thompson, 160-pounder Chris Swittenberg and 170-pounder Scott Hill each advanced to the state tournament after successful seasons.

That trio, along with Jacob Hopper (85), Adrian Terran (150) and Markel Elkins (105) won their individual clases at meets across the state.

Hopper and Swittenberg won meets at Belton-Honey Path and Lugoff-Elgin. Hill, Terran and Elkins were victorious at Belton-Honey Path, while Thompson won the heavyweight class at Lugoff-Elgin.

Interest in high school wrestling across the county is growing.

The Newberry High School wrestling team had wrestlers advance to the 2-A state finals this past season.

The Whitmire Community program had several landmark wins this season, and Mid-Carolina is planning on starting a wrestling team next school year.
