Eagles' softball wins three of last five

The Newberry Academy softball team has gone 3-2 in its last five games to improve its record to 7-4 on the season.

The Eagles opened up the stretch with a comfortable 17-6 rout of Laurens Academy.

Newberry Academy pounded out 19 hits for the game, led by three hits each from Allison Shaw, Ashley Chaffee, and Noel Franklin.

Jessica Cole was 2-for-4 with a double and triple, while Jacqueline Strowd, Marina Miller and Ashley Dominick each had two hits. Faith Franklin and Dakota Dye each chipped in with singles.

Cole picked up the win after striking out 11.

The Eagles fell to reigning SCISA Class A state champion Wardlaw Academy 15-1 last Tuesday.

Newberry Academy managed just five hits, while Cole struck out six.

Two days later, the Eagles took advantage of untimely errors and walks to edge Greenwood Academy 6-2. Noel Franklin and Cole each had big hits in the win. Cole struck out 15 for the win.

Newberry Academy let a big lead late slip away Monday in an 8-6 loss to Richard Winn Academy.

RWA piled up seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to rally back for the win.

Cole, Strowd, Noel Franklin, Dominick and Faith Franklin each singled in the game. Miller pitched in with a double.

Cole picked up the loss despite striking out 14.

The Eagles bounced back by pounding Orangeburg Christian 13-1 Tuesday.

Newberry Academy erupted for seven runs in the first inning to put the game away early.

Cole led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double, while Chaffee was 3-for-3 including a double.

Dominick finished 2-for-2, while Shaw, Miller, Erika Deskins, Noel Franklin and Faith Franklin each added a hit.

The Eagles will be back in action Monday when they travel to Grace Christian.
