A young child playing with a lighter has left eight people homeless.

The 3-year-old was watching television Monday afternoon in a bedroom and began playing with a lighter, according to Consolidated Fire Chief Wayne Blount. The play led to bedding catching on fire. No one was injured.

The fire call came in just after 5 p.m. and was responded to by the Consolidated, Pomaria, St. Phillips, and Little Mountain fire departments and the Pomaria Rescue Squad.

The home on Bundrick Road, off of New Hope Road, was totally destroyed by the blaze.

Five adults and three children were living in the residence. Red Cross is assisting the family.
