Numerous people have signed up to run for local offices with the last day to file with parties being Sunday.

For the Senate 18 seat, Michael Ray Ellisor has signed up with the Democratic Party to challenge Republican incumbent Ronnie Cromer.

So far District 40 House member Walt McLeod (D) and District 15 representative Jeff Duncan (R) are running unopposed.

Incumbent Clerk of Court Jackie Bowers (D) and Sheriff Lee Foster (D) also face no challengers.

For the county auditor position Democrat Donna Lominick will face Republican Nancy Harvey. Current Auditor Nancy Owen announced her retirement this past fall.

With Treasurer Judy Floyd retiring, three people have filed to be the new county treasurer. Republicans Benji Chapman and Jackie Haltiwanger will meet in the party's June primaries and will face Democrat Karen Lindler in November.

Coroner James Smith has announced he will not seek reelection, but Chief Deputy Coroner Tommy Hedgepath has filed to run as a Republican.

After much criticism over property taxes, members of County Council are being opposed by a number of individuals.

The only council member without opposition is District 1 Councilman Edgar Baker, who represents the Whitmire and Bush River sections.

District 2 incumbent John David Dawkins will run as a Democrat and face the winner of the Republican primary between Steve Stockman and John Hunter. This district serves the Lake Murray and Prosperity areas.

There will be both a Democratic and Republican primary for the District 4 seat, which covers the Prosperity area.

Democratic incumbent Mike Hawkins will face Kirksey Koon and former councilman Wyman Cook. Republicans Kenneth Sanders and Todd Morris will vie for candidacy in District 4 too.

In District 5, which represents Newberry City, democratic incumbent County Council Chairman Henry Summer will face Republican Les Hipp.

Both party's filing periods end on Sunday.
