Barn burning, paint balls charged to teens

Two juveniles are reportedly responsible for shooting paint balls at vehicles and burning down a barn over the weekend.

Sheriff's Office deputies were called Saturday morning to Clara Brown Road in Prosperity by victims whose vehicles had been peppered with paint balls.

Around 6:30 that night, Prosperity and Fairview fire departments responded to a barn and woods fire in the 1300 block of Brown Street.

The fire destroyed the barn and burned several acres of woods around it.

There was hay and wagons in the barn, according to Sheriff Lee Foster.

Prosperity Fire Chief Mark Bowers said there was a one- and two-horse wagon in the large barn.

“The fire was difficult to reach because it was remotely located in a wooded area, and (firefighters) had to pull fire hoses for an extended distance to attempt to combat the fire,“ said Foster.

The S.C. Forestry Service responded with a bulldozer to the scene carving out fire breaks to prevent the fire's spread.

Upon investigation of the fire and paint ball incidents, which were on the surface unrelated, deputies learned that two juveniles had been camping out in the woods in the area. The boys were reportedly camping in the vicinity of their homes. When the night turned cold, the teens built a fire at the barn for warmth, police say, later mistakenly thinking they had adequately extinguished the fire. Gusty winds are thought to have fanned the fire back into a lively blaze, destroying the barn and torching a portion of the woods.

Foster stated the two juveniles, ages 14 and 16, who live in the Prosperity area, were also responsible for the paint ball damage done to vehicles earlier in the day.

“They will be charged in the family court for damaging the vehicles and the fire,“ said Foster. “They will be charged with malicious injury to property. No criminal charges will be charged related to the fire; however, their families will likely be held liable for the damages caused by the fire.“

The blazes continued for Prosperity's firefighters however. Yesterday morning, the department responded to a shed fire behind a house on Morris Road in Prosperity. The fire destroyed the shed.

Bowers believes the fire started at a heat lamp used in the back of the shed to keep dogs in a kennel warm. None of the dogs were hurt in the 5:45 a.m. fire.
