The owner of Marx Marina has been accused of trying to kill her husband by poisoning.

Susan Brooks, 60, with a home address at 281 Hunt Club Road, Union, and a business at 745 Marina Way, Prosperity, was arrested Sunday and charged with attempt to commit murder, according to the booking report. Brooks owns and operates Marx Marina on Lake Murray.

Between Thursday and Sunday, Brooks “did attempt to commit the offense of murder...Brooks did attempt to maliciously administer or attempt to administer drugs or poisons to Mark Hanners with the intent to kill the said person,” according to an arrest warrant signed by Sheriff's Office Investigator Robert Dennis.

Hanners is listed as Brooks' husband on the arresting paperwork.

The warrant claims the attempt on Hanners' life took place at Marx Marina. Rumors have swirled throughout the community since the weekend as the doors for the Prosperity-area business remained closed.

According to a police report filed with the Sheriff's Office, police received information from a confidential informant that Brooks had made several statements about attempting to, “Get rid of her husband.”

Based on an investigation launched into this case, officers interviewed several witnesses and heard reports of some type of crushed medication being placed in the victim's drink. Sheriff Lee Foster would not comment on who those witnesses were, or the nature of the statements, however, he said that the information received was substantial enough to justify charging the defendant with attempted murder.

Solicitor Jerry Peace says typically a person is charged with assault of a high and aggravated nature in these situations and he is unable to find state law allowing the attempted murder charge.

“It was very likely that Brooks attempted to get others to assist her in the crime,” said Foster. “Several samples of the medication(s) have been taken to the State Law Enforcement Division for analysis. The results of that analysis will take some time.”

The Sheriff said the analysis results will be released once received by his office. While the investigation is still ongoing, the apparent cause of the attempt on the victim's life was a combination of ongoing business and domestic-related disputes between the couple, who jointly operate a bar/club called Marx Marina Foster says.

Brooks is being held in the Newberry County Detention Center. Due to the charge carrying up to a life sentence, the magistrate's office said Brooks' bond must be set by a circuit court judge.

“While this is certainly most serious in nature and there was great threat of harm and death to the victim, we do not believe that the safety or health of anyone other than the victim was ever jeopardized,” a release from the Sheriff's Office states.

“...the underlying factors will become more clear as the investigation continues” Foster continued. “We may never completely understand all of the factors involved, but we should be able to at least get a clearer picture of the events that led to this serious incident.”

Major Todd Johnson said investigators are meeting with Brooks and her attorney today.

Brooks took over sole management of the lakeside establishment in January.
