The Whitmire wrestling team followed up last week's dramatic win against Newberry with a 25-24 victory against Ware Shoals Wednesday on the road.

The meet was tied 24-24 at the conclusion of individual matches, but the Wolverines were awarded the victory after scoring the greater number of first points in the match. Whitmire won despite not even filling half of the weight classes that competed.

“Anytime in wrestling that you can win while only filling six of 14 weight classes, it's a big win,” Whitmire coach Jarrod King said. “After losing to Ware Shoals the first time we met, our guys were really disappointed in themselves. They were determined to have a different outcome this time around. I always enjoy seeing young people set their minds to a goal, work towards that goal, and then reap the benefits of their hard work.”

The Wolverines won four of the six matches they competed in, all by pins.

Seth Horton won his match at 132 pounds with 44.5 seconds remaining in the first period. Tim Epps was victorious in the 162-pound event with a pin with 30.9 seconds to go in the second period.

Phillip Wicker usually wrestles at 191 pounds, but jumped up to 215 and earned a first period pin.

Heavyweight Jeremy Lyles pinned his opponent just past the one minute mark in the first period.

“I definitely feel like we are headed in the right direction at a very critical time in the season,” King said. “Wrestling is a fairly unknown sport here in South Carolina and it is extremely new to the Whitmire community.”

The Wolverines will be back in action Tuesday when they host Newberry and Christ Church in a dual meet. Match time is set for 6 p.m.
