A family of seven was able to escape early this morning as their home burned, but the family lost all of their belonging in the fire.
Newberry firefighters were called to 403 Rodelsperger St. around 2:10 a.m. to find the home engulfed in flames.
Fire Chief Joe Palmer said the family of seven was sleeping in the front living room around a space heater in the home at the corner of Rodelsperger and Hiller streets. He added the fire started in the living room.
“It is amazing that they all got out with no injuries,” said Palmer.
But the family lost all of their belongings in the fire.
“They are really going to need help to get through Christmas,” said Palmer.
Fire officials have not determined what caused the fire but think it was accidental. They will continue to investigate the cause of the fire today.
The American Red Cross has put the family in a motel for the next couple of days.
The fire department is already in the midst of handing out toys and food to families for the holiday and said it would also take donations for this family. Included in the family are young children.
Note: Due to this being a breaking story the ages and clothes' sizes of the family members were not available. We will follow up on the needs of the family and post them at
www.newberryobserver.com and in Friday's paper.
