After Black Friday comes Cyber Monday, the biggest day for online holiday shopping.

So while surfers are crossing off items on their holiday lists, they can also make sure a percentage of purchases goes to a charity (including three local organizations) of their choice.

The Newberry County School District's Public Education Foundation, Friends of The Newberry County Guardian ad Litem program and the Newberry County Career Center are all on the list of possible recipients, as well as a host of other state and national organizations.

To make sure the chosen group benefits from online shoppers, Internet users are asked to shop through GoodShop.com. Consumers can choose from well-known retail stores such as Target, Nike, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Apple, Barnes & Noble, the GAP, Land's End, Macy's and more. The prices are the same, but by using GoodShop, 37 percent of the purchase price is donated to the shopper's chosen cause.

Charities, including the Newberry-based organizations, can receive donations even before online shoppers hit the “buy” button. GoodSearch.com, GoodShop's sister site, is a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates to a user's charity with every search.

To select one of the Newberry-based organizations, visit GoodShop.com or GoodSearch.com, and type “Newberry” in the line under “Who do you GoodSearch for?” Or, go to www.goodsearch.com/CharityList.aspx to view a list of all benefiting organizations.

National charities like the ASPCA, which has earned more than $7,700, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which has earned more than $5,500 through GoodSearch, are on the list. More than 47,000 nonprofit organizations and schools garner money through the sites.

“The response to this idea has truly been overwhelming,” said Ken Rambert, co-founder of GoodSearch. “More than 100 new nonprofits and schools register daily. GoodSearch and GoodShop are truly making a difference in communities across the country.”
