INDIANS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON AGAINST BREVARD

The Newberry Indians (8-2, 4-2 SAC, 22 AFCA, 19 D2Football.com) host Senior Night with their playoff hopes still alive.

Brevard (2-8) has had limited success in its second season of competition, with wins over Chowan and LaGrange.

A quick look at Brevard

The Tornados are facing their third straight nationally-ranked SAC opponent to finish the season. Brevard has previously played Carson-Newman and Catawba.

In last week's loss, the Tornados gained 355-total offensive yards for the game, collecting 25 first downs and ran a total of 77 plays, despite turning the ball over six times. The BC offensive attack was led by the running game which picked up 285-yards on the ground behind a young offensive line that controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the game.

Freshman quarterback Trey Wilborn had perhaps his best game of the season, rushing 19 times for 112-yards, but more importantly connecting on 6 of his 8 pass attempts for 70-yards and two touchdowns. Junior running back John Taylor carried the ball 16 times for 73-yards and a score, while redshirt-freshman fullback Derek Church had a career day of 17 carries for 53-yards and caught a touchdown pass from Wilborn.

A quick look at Newberry

Last week, Newberry retained the Bishops Trophy for the second straight year with a 24-0 whitewash of Lenoir-Rhyne. It was the first time the Indians had shut out the Bears since 1953.

Quarterback Brandon Gantt ran for 110 yards and a touchdown as well as going 16- of-25 for 157 yards and a touchdown through the air. Backup QB Michael Johnson was 4-of-7 passing for 47 yards and a score.

Tharry Salley rushed for 52 yards on 11 carries, while Alex Haynes and Derek Young each racked up 44 yards.

Kelton Tindal and David Brown each recorded touchdown receptions.

The defense had one of its top performances in SAC play, holding the Bears to 99 yards rushing and 32 yards passing, for a total of 131 yards of total offense. The Indians also held L-R to a 0-for-13 rate on third downs.

Kicker Ryan Lukshis was 3-for-3 on point after attempts, and also had a 35-yard field goal in the first half.

SCARLET BASEBALL FORCES GAME FIVE WITH EXTRA INNING 4-3 WIN OVER GRAY

The Scarlet team took an early lead but had to push across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to win Game Four of the Fall World Series, 4-3, Thursday night.

Brandon Mand (Mason, Ohio) grounded into a bases-loaded fielder's choice to score the winning run. Mand recorded Scarlet's only two RBIs on the night, with the other two runs coming on wild pitches.

Stephen Byrd (Vero Beach, Fla.) picked up the win, giving up one earned run on two hits in 3.1 innings of relief to earn Game MVP honors.

Scarlet had taken an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the second inning, but Gray put together a comeback to send the game to extra innings. C.J. Tyrkala (Palm Harbor, Fla.) led the top of the fifth off with a single, followed by a double from Derek Bley (Upper Arlington, Ohio). Casey Faulkenberry (Camden) grounded out to second base, scoring Tyrkala. Bley then scored when Tyler Manasa (Miami, Fla.) reached on an error.)

The Gray squad tied the game in the sixth when Michael Morin (Miami, Fla.) scored on an RBI single by Tyrkala. Tyrkala was 3-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI in the game.

Thomas Berryhill (Aynor) came to the mound in relief in the bottom of the eighth, but Mand's bases loaded fielder's choice forced the decisive fifth game.

Game Five is scheduled for approximately 3:45 Friday afternoon at the Smith Road Baseball Complex.
