Waiting until the 11th hour

Until your grandmother is diagnosed with Alzheimers, you forget to ask for her family-famous stuffing recipe. A couple struggles and fights through 12 years of marriage and three children before two instances of adultery send them to a marriage counselor. Sometimes waiting until the 11th hour can really be a shame. On this Nov. 11, don't let that hour pass you by.

It's Veterans' Day Sunday, and the date is no mistake. The 11th day of the 11th month is a time that has been selected for us as a nation to step up and say “thank you.” In person would be best, and for those who want to get ahead of the 11th hour, tomorrow morning offers a golden opportunity. Newberry's annual Veterans' Day parade begins at 11 a.m. downtown, and there should be veterans aplenty to show your gratitude to-if only by just showing up. Several school observances are being held today, and doing just that. One can only hope that students are able to learn to hold those who keep us all safe in esteem. Veterans Appreciation Day is Monday with American Legion and those posts, along with VFW's have much to offer those seeking veterans to honor.

The point really is, please do something. Everyone has a busy life, and we often think that tomorrow, tomorrow, will be soon enough to get that recipe, have that talk with a spouse or to thank someone-but sometimes, it is not.

It is no mistake that there is a day set aside each year to thank our veterans. They deserve it, and so much more. Maybe you cannot make any of these events. Maybe you do not know a single veteran personally. Go to a local nursing home, you will find one-and you can thank them. Sit down Sunday and write a letter to a legislator, tell them that you want them to support bills that support veterans, their health care, their benefits, funding that protects the soldiers in the field now.

As we head into a holiday season, feeling comfortable and counting our blessings, let's count our veterans among those. Our veterans stepped up and put their personal peace of mind on the line, whether they saw combat or not, becoming a soldier is life changing. Let's show our esteem; they deserve that, and so much more.
