Today, the second Monday in October, is nationally recognized as Columbus Day, a celebration of its namesake's arrival to the Americas in 1492.

Federal offices, including post offices and most banks, will be closed today. The Newberry County Library will also be closed. However, schools, including Newberry College, and all state, city and county offices will remain open. The holiday will have no effect on garbage collections.

The Europeans are traditionally recognized as arriving in America on Oct. 12, 1492. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt set the day aside as an official national holiday in 1937, and Columbus Day has been celebrated on the second Monday in October since 1971.

While most banks and post offices around the nation observe Columbus Day as a holiday and are closed, some areas of the United States do not celebrate on the day citing the effects that Columbus' arrival had on the Native Americans. Approximately 85 percent of indigenous people in America were killed within 150 years of Columbus' arrival. This was due largely to diseases like smallpox that spread throughout the Native American people.
