Things are changing at several schools around the county as the district's multi-million dollar building plan pushes ahead. And as more space is made available, attendance lines may be the next thing changing.
The Board of Education agreed to meet for a work session on Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss county attendance lines.
Board Chair Don Saylor said it's time the district takes a good look at its goals down the road, especially as construction comes to an end in the next couple of years. The new Mid-Carolina High School is expected to open near the end of 2008, and renovations and additions to both Little Mountain Elementary and Pomaria-Garmany Elementary should finish up in the next two or so years.
The work session will be held at the Learning Center between Newberry High and the Career Center, and the meeting is open to the public.
Bond resolution
As part of its annual payment of the installment purchase program set up for the $77.6 million building project, the board approved the issuance of $5.5 million in general obligation bonds.
The 53 mills, that the board agreed not to exceed throughout the building plan, this year produced approximately $5.5 million. Of that, about $4.9 million is going to pay back (with interest) the loan. The rest will go towards general capital improvements around the districts.
The loan is to be paid by the year 2010.
Changed meeting dates
Due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the November and December Board of Education meetings will be held a week earlier. The board will now meet on Nov. 19 and Dec. 17.
