Eagles’ hoops fly high at Shootout

The Newberry Academy boys’ basketball team raced out to an early lead and held on from there to a 62-49 victory against Covenant Christian Friday in the Newberry Academy Eagles Sonic Shootout.

The Eagles used a 10-2 spurt in the opening minutes to take a 14-6 lead after the first quarter.

Newberry led for the remainder of the game. Covenant was as close as six on two occasions in the second half, but trailed by double-digits for the entire fourth quarter.

Derek Sligh had a huge game for the Eagles with 18 points. Sligh drilled a couple of threes in the game, including one that ignited a 7-0 run in the third quarter.

Jamal Robeteau and B.J. Manis finished with 11 points each, while Matt Bell chipped in 10.

Academy boys rout King, 65-46

The Newberry Academy boys’ team finished off a successful weekend by hammering King Academy 65-46 Saturday in the final game of the Newberry Academy Eagles Sonic Shootout.

Robeteau carried the Eagles with 27 points, while Daulton Halfacre chipped in 12. Matt Bell and Thomas Carlson scored nine points each.

The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Glenforest for the fourth game of a quadrupleheader. Games are slated to begin at 4 p.m.

Academy girls bury Covenant

The Newberry Academy girls’ basketball team got off to a quick start and cruised from there to a 45-25 victory Friday against Covenant Christian in its first game of the Newberry Academy Eagles Sonic Shootout.

Newberry Academy raced out to an 11-2 first quarter lead behind a 3-pointer by Kacie Sanders and Jessica Cole transition layups.

Newberry held Covenant without a point for nearly five minutes during the first quarter and took a comfortable 24-13 lead into halftime. The Eagles extended their lead to as much as 15 in the third quarter before finishing with a 20-point victory.

Cole paced Newberry Academy with 12 points, while Noel Franklin, Marina Miller and Ashley Chaffee added eight points each.

NOTE — Newberry Academy faced King Academy Saturday in its final game of the shootout. Results were not available at press time.
