PROSPERITY — Luther James “L.J.” Long, 82, of 131 South Wheeler Ave., Prosperity died Monday, Nov. 1, 2010 at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Born on March 25, 1928 in Newberry County, he was a son of the late L. Evans and Martha Cook Long.

Mr. Long was a Navy Veteran of WWII having served on the U.S.S. Missouri. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, was the oldest member of the Prosperity Fire Department and was a charter member of the Prosperity Rescue Squad.

Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy “Dot” Cannon Long; daughters and sons-in-law; Deborah L. and Phil Ruff of Prosperity, Lisa L. and David Riley of Florence, and Paula and Ronnie Pridgen of Marion; grandchildren and their spouses, Brandon and Julie Shealy, Nathan and Sydney Shealy, Jennifer and Bain Chandler, Josh Riley, Elizabeth Pridgen, and Matthew Pridgen; and great-grandchildren, Sullivan Shealy, Skylar Grace Shealy, and Camryn Shealy. He was predeceased by a brother, Carl Long.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church by the Rev. Eric Fink. Interment with military honors will be in Newberry Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Whitaker Funeral Home in Newberry.

Active Pallbearers will be his grandsons and Bart Chapman. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Oscar Lovelace and the Members of the Prosperity Fire Department.
