Three Wolves earn conference accolades


NEWBERRY — Newberry College women’s soccer players Michelle Calmeyn and Guadalupe Magana were named to Second Team All-Conference while Valeria Newcomb received an Honorable Mention for the South Atlantic Conference Annual Women’s Soccer Awards.

For the 2015 season, Calmeyn led the team in goals with 15 and points with 32. Calmeyn also dished out two assists.

Calmeyn was named the Corvias Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, as announced by the ECAC office on Oct. 27. Calmeyn also has broken the school record for individual single season goals with 15.

Calmeyn is also ranked in the top 10 in school history in two more categories — individual points in a single season and goals for an individual career goals.

Magana scored two goals and had four assists. Magana scored one goal in the Alabama-Huntsville game and one in the Mars Hill game. She was the team’s leader from the midfield and a team captain. She was second on the team in minutes played.

Newcomb scored one goal in the Lincoln Memorial game. She played the third-most minutes on team and was one of the top defenders in the conference all season. She has rarely come off the field in her two seasons in the scarlet and gray and will be one of the building blocks for the team for the next few years.

The Wolves lost to Wingate in the South Atlantic Conference Championship Quarterfinals match, 1-0. The Wolves ended their season 5-10-2 overall and 4-7-0 in the conference.
