NEWBERRY — The Newberry College women’s soccer team defeated Mars Hill 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the game, the Wolves honored six seniors: Rebecca Darley, Alexis Carrillo, Guadalupe Magana, Michelle Calmeyn, Brenda Espinoza, and Amber Sanchez.

Espinoza took the first shot two minutes in but it was blocked by a Mars Hill defender. Nine minutes later Sara Silvestro took a shot but it was saved by the Lions’ keeper. The score was stuck at 0-0 until the 30:25 minute mark when Calmeyn scored the game’s first goal. Calmeyn got fouled in the box getting a penalty kick where she finished it.

Newberry kept the lead throughout the first half. For the half, Newberry took 11 shots compared to the Lions’ two. Darley made two saves in goal for the Wolves.

Erika Linch started the second half strong offensively by taking a shot 18 seconds into the half. Five minutes later Linch took a header but it went high.

Magana scored Newberry’s second goal at the 75:36 mark by finding the top left corner from about 35 yards out. Lindsay Huber dished the pass taking the assist.

With eight minutes left in the game Newberry sealed the win when Calmeyn scored the third goal. Elizabeth Gutierrez crossed the ball from the left side for Calmeyn to finish it. The goal was Calmeyn’s 15th goal of the season.

For the game, Newberry took 25 shots while Mars Hill took seven. Carrillo made one save in goal and Darley made two for the game.

The Wolves travel to Lenoir- Rhyne on Saturday, Oct. 31. to play at 1 p.m.
