KIAWAH ISLAND — Led by a strong back nine from Evan DeGrazia, the Newberry Wolves took third place in the second annual Newberry Invitational at The Ocean Course on Tuesday.

Newberry wrapped up the event at 898 (293-300-305), two strokes behind North Greenville and 15 strokes behind champions Georgia Southwestern.

DeGrazia scuffled early in his third round, but recovered well to shoot a 1-over par 73 for the day. His three-round total of 220 (77-70-73, +4) tied him for third place in the individual standings. He led all players in the event with 12 birdies.

Carlos Leandro finished in the top 10 in the event with a three-round total of 224 (75-70-79, +8), shooting nine birdies in the 54 holes.

Spencer Skiff placed 14th at 226 (66-84-76, +10), also carding nine birdies to go with an eagle. Fredrik Fossum tied for 20th at 228 (75-76-77, +12) and was one of six players in the field with an average of even or better on par threes. Zack Sherman rounded out the Newberry contingent in 62nd at 249 (83-86-80, +33).

Every tournament record in the brief history of the event was broken thanks to excellent scoring conditions and much more mild weather than the 2015 event:

Team Champion: Georgia Southwestern (299-290-294=883)

Low Team Round: Georgia Southwestern (290, 2nd round)

Individual Medalist: Tyler Barker, Georgia Southwestern (76-71-69, 216, even par)

Individual Low Round: Spencer Skiff, Newberry (66, first round)

The Wolves take a break and return to action on March 13-14, playing in Wingate’s Ralph Hargett Intercollegiate at Monroe Country Club in Monroe, N.C.
