NEWBERRY — Newberry College junior running back Romelo Doctor has been named as a finalist for the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame’s Collegiate Player of the Year, presented by Hale’s Jewelers.

Doctor, a junior from Summerville and graduate of Ashley Ridge HS, has had a fantastic season rushing the football, with 843 net yards on 166 carries. He needs only 157 rushing yards in the final three games of the season to reach 1,000 yards for the season, which would make him the 13th Newberry back to do so.

He had 1,636 career rushing yards, and needs only 38 yards to reach the top 10 in the career records at Newberry. His five 100-yard rushing games this season give him eight in his career, tying him for the sixth-most in school history.

Doctor has had four consecutive 100-yard games, and with 100 yards against Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday, would become the first Newberry player to have five consecutive 100-yard games.

The award will be voted on by members of the South Carolina Football Hall of Fame.

Others nominated for the award are Presbyterian running back Darrell Bridges, Charleston Southern linebacker Solomon Brown, South Carolina wide receiver Pharoh Cooper, The Citadel defensive back Dee Delaney, Florida State quarterback Everett Golson, South Carolina State defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, North Greenville running back Ashton Heard, Coastal Carolina running back De’Angelo Henderson, Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson, South Carolina linebacker Skai Moore, Furman cornerback Trey Robinson, N.C.
