NEWBERRY – The Newberry College Wolves hit the road to Tennessee this weekend, playing Carson-Newman in a key South Atlantic Conference match-up at C-N’s Burke-Tarr Stadium at 3 p.m. this Saturday.

Newberry is 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. Carson-Newman is 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SAC play.

NEWS AND NOTES

• The Newberry College Wolves head to East Tennessee and Mossy Creek to take on the Carson-Newman Eagles this Saturday.

• This is game number 997 for the scarlet and gray in season No. 102. Newberry has a 412-548-36 record.

• The Wolves and Eagles have been playing each other off and on since 1940, and the game has been one of the most entertaining match-ups of the year for the past few seasons.

• Newberry is coming off of two rain-marred losses, but will be buoyed by optimism in the second half of the season.

• The Wolves’ offense will look for some pop after consistent performances which have not resulted in points. The defense is in the top third of the nation in every category.

• Statistics show that Newberry offense will most likely find success on the ground. The Wolves rank 13th nationally in rushing yardage and have had eight 100-yard individual performances in the season’s first six games. Conversely, the Eagles rank 7th from bottom nationally in rushing yards allowed.

• While the Newberry defense has been strong all year, getting back over .500 will require discipline, as this is the first of three straight games against option-based attacks.

• The Wolves are the only team in the conference to face the three option teams in consecutive weeks this season.

• The last four games between the team have featured hot starts by the eventual winners, including Raleigh Yeldell accounting for four touchdowns in the first quarter last season.

• Newberry’s last win in Jefferson City was the polar opposite of those games, as the Wolves won 24-3 in 2011, holding C-N without a touchdown for the first time in the match-up since 1985.

• This is C-N’s fifth straight conference game, with big wins over Mars Hill and Brevard, a tight loss to Catawba and a blowout loss to Lenoir-Rhyne.
