ANDERSON — Despite being more offensive than Anderson University, the Newberry College women’s soccer team dropped to the Trojans, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon.

Four minutes into the game, Rachelle Serrano looked for the goal but it was blocked. Michelle Calmeyn took one off the head but the ball went wide left 13 minutes later. Erika Linch took a shot on goal but it was saved by Abby Helm at the 18:40 mark.

One minute later Guadalupe Magana took a shot on goal but it was also saved by Helm. Helm kept the momentum up by saving a shot from Calmeyn with 25 minutes left. With 13 minutes left, Ragan Hill shot high followed by Calmeyn’s ball that was blocked before getting her own rebound and shooting high.

At the 35th minute, Idoia Agirre scored for Anderson off a lob pass from Mariana Poveda for the, 1-0, lead.

For the half, Anderson and Newberry were even in shots with eight. Three of the Wolves’ shots were on goal compared to the Trojans’ two. Rebecca Darley made three saves in goal for Newberry.

Calmeyn was putting the pressure on offensively for the Wolves in the second half by taking three shots in the first seven minutes. Calmeyn’s header went wide left, followed by another shot from her foot that went wide right, and finally shooting high.

Calmeyn’s hard work paid off by scoring Newberry’s first goal just eight minutes in. Elizabeth Gutierrez passed through the back line for Calmeyn to flick it into the net.

Newberry didn’t get another shot off until 70 minutes into the game when Brenda Espinoza shot the ball high. Agirre scored the second and final goal for Anderson at the 85:24 minute mark off a throw in by Jaclyn Kubiak.

In the last 10 minutes of the game, the Wolves got off two shots. Lindsay Huber and Magana both took one shot apiece but both were high.

Newberry outshot Anderson, 16-14, while Darley made three saves in goal.

The Wolves are on the road again at Lincoln Memorial on October 10 for a 1 p.m. start.
