BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — The Newberry College field hockey team pulled a stunning upset Saturday, as the Wolves (2-6-0, 0-2-0 ECAC) shut out No. 5 Bloomsburg (6-5, 2-1 PSAC) 2-0 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium.

The win is the field hockey team’s first-ever win over a nationally ranked opponent, as well as the team’s first-ever shutout. This is also the first win by any Newberry team over a top five program since baseball beat No. 1 Mount Olive in 2012.

Courtlyn Warren scored both goals the Wolves. Warren scored her first goal in the first half at the 29:29 mark and scored her second goal in the second half at the 40:46 mark to give the Wolves the win.

Bloomsburg started off with a bunch of shots in the opening 15 minutes. All of the Huskies’ shots were saved by Wolves goalkeeper Dakota Elzy. The Wolves got their first shot off at the 19:15 minute mark. The Wolves scored the lone goal of the first half at the 29:29 minute mark when Warren scored off of a penalty corner. Bloomsburg came back with a shot of their own from Tess Shelly at the 32:07 mark but was saved by Wolves keeper Elzy.

The second half started with pressure by the Wolves. The Wolves had five shots in two minutes and five corners. Warren scored her second goal at the 40:46 minute mark to give the Wolves the 2-0 lead. Late in the second half Bloomsburg was putting on pressure of their own with three shots and five penalty corners in the final 10 minutes. The Wolves defense stayed strong to hold the 2-0 lead. Bloomsburg had a late try off a penalty corner taken by Sam Peters but could not get a shot off.

The Wolves were led by Courtlyn Warren who had six shots on goal and scored two goals. Megan Eisenhardt had one shot on goal to give the Wolves a total of seven shots on goal for the day. Dakota Elzy had nine saves on the day while the team had 12 shots, seven of them on goal. The Wolves tallied 10 corners.

Bloomsburg was led by Sam Peters and Eleanor Kirby who each tallied two shots on goal. As a team Bloomsburg tallied 14 shots, nine on goal while adding 13 corners. Lindsay Cassel had five saves on the afternoon.
