NEWBERRY — Newberry Academy varsity basketball swept visiting Whitmire last Friday, with the girls winning 45-29 and the boys winning 50-38.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Eagles applied an effective full-court press and raced to an early 14-2 lead. By halftime, the score was stretched to 26-7. The Lady Wolverines had a better second half, but were unable to significantly cut into the lead. Daja Taylor led the Lady Eagles with 22 points, 11 steals and four rebounds. Senior Amber Suber added 11 points and six rebounds. Other players to score for Newberry included Kathryn Wilbanks with five points, Amy Fuller with four points, Michelle Brown with two points and Sarah Buford with one point.
The Lady Wolverines were led by Raegan Kendrick with eight points, followed by Hailee Robbins with five points. Taylor Peay finished with four points, and Samantha Strubeck, Alexus Sanders and Kalynn Roche each had three points. Chelsea Goggins scored two points and Jazmine Curenton added one point for the Lady Wolverines.
In the boys’ game, the Eagles pounded the ball inside leading to early foul trouble for Whitmire’s post players. Newberry slowly built a lead, going up by five after the first quarter and leading by 12 at halftime. The Eagles widened the gap to 20 points by the end of the third period and coasted to the win. The Eagles were led by Wes Huffstetter with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Bennett Connelly and Payton Gardner added five points each, while McCallum Senn had four points. Anthony McLean, Shield Sawyer, Luke Allen and Matthew Cole each had two points. Andy Lin added one point.
The Wolverines were led by Trey Lyles with 11 points and CJ Wicker with 10 points. Nathan Stanley scored eight points and Quentin Aughtry added five points. Whitmire’s scoring was rounded out by two points from CJ Saverance.
Whitmire travels to Richard Winn on Monday and Newberry Academy is in action on Tuesday when they take on Wardlaw.
