ROCK HILL — The Newberry College women’s basketball team has been picked fifth in the annual South Atlantic Conference Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the league office.

The Wolves hold the No. 5 position with 71 points. Wingate is picked to finish first in the conference with 97 points with seven first place votes.

The coaches also submitted their Preseason All-Conference selections.

A junior center, Meg Essex was selected to the 2017-2018 All-Conference Preseason First-Team. She is a highly decorated player and has been on pre-and post-season teams for several seasons. During the 2016-2017 season she scored 385 points, had nine steals, 71 blocks, 25 assists, started and played in 26 games, totaled 160 rebounds (53 offensive and 107 defensive).

The senior point guard, Nicola Handreck was selected to the 2017-2018 All-Conference Preseason Second-Team. Handreck is another decorated Wolves player, marking another consecutive season obtaining this honor. She started in all 27 games last season, totaled 370 points, 36 steals, 105 assists, 161 rebounds with 29 being offensive and 132 defensive.

Lincoln Memorial claimed the second position in the poll earning 85 points with one first place vote. Anderson and Carson-Newman nabbed the remaining third and fourth positions with 84 and 74 points respectively, Anderson notched three first place votes.
