WHITMIRE — The Whitmire High School Wolverines are on the road tonight as they travel to Due West to take on the Dixie High School Hornets. The Wolverines are currently 4-4 and 2-0 in the Region, the Hornets are 5-3 and 2-1 in the Region.

If the Wolverines are victorious tonight, they will be 3-0 in the Region.

“That would set up a match-up with McCormick, who is also 3-0. That game would be for the Region Championship,” said Head Coach Charlie Jenkins

To help prepare for tonight’s game the Wolverines have focused on staying healthy and being mentally ready on their assignments. Jenkins said they have a good plan to stop Dixie’s offense and if they execute they will win.

“This should be a very physical game. Neither team can really ‘outrun’ the other team with speed. So it will probably turn into a wrestling match at the line of scrimmage. The team that can push and shove and tackle the best will win,” he said.

During last week’s game against Calhoun Falls Charter the Wolverines had success with passing, but that may not repeat tonight.

“It is an often used sports cliché, but we always try to ‘take what they give us.’ If they overplay the run, we throw it. If they overplay the pass, we run it,” Jenkins said.

During the game, the Wolverines will be watching Dee Donald, junior wingback for the Hornets. He is 6’1 and 225 pounds, and according to Jenkins, strong and quick.

“It will take a team effort to stop him,” he said.

To help ensure a victory tonight the Wolverines will need to avoid any turnovers, illegal procedures or offsides. Jenkins said that all of those are unforced errors, and they cannot have many if they want to win.

Tonight’s game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. in Due West.
