NEWBERRY — The Newberry Wolves women’s soccer team had a 3-0 shut out against the Rams of Albany State on Monday afternoon.

Freshman Courtney Velazquez was an offensive threat in the contest for the Wolves (4-10, 1-7 SAC) capturing her first goal of the season, as she gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. Newberry had sole possession of the ball in the first half, out shooting the Rams (0-10) 13-9, with seven of their shots being on frame.

Deisi Hernandez, who came into the Newberry program with 133 career goals at Southwestern Randolph High School, recorded her first collegiate goal. From a slashing Velazquez, Hernandez shot from eight yards out to sail the ball to the back of the net. The Wolves held consistent defense in the opening minutes of the second half, withholding the Rams from shooting for seven minutes.

Newberry pushed their lead to 3-0 when sophomore midfielder Daphne Heyaime scored from the middle of the box and placing it into the bottom corner of the net. With the goal, Heyaime registers her second goal of the season. She tallied five shots in the contest, three of which were goal.

Newberry recorded 26 shots on the afternoon, 12 of which were on frame. Velazquez added five shots, with three on goal and an assist. Alyssa Ortega, who ranks second in shots in the conference was on the giving end in this match up, assisting on two goals. Freshman goalkeeper Jayleen Gant recorded six saves, which puts her at fourth in the conference.

Newberry will face Mars Hill for Senior Day, on Saturday, Oct 21. at Smith Road Complex. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
